I have not written this type of song before. When I start trying to play, searching for melodies and harmonies at the piano, the songs often grow into something I hadn't thought of from the start. They surprise me, this time both lyrically and musically.
Here the tempo is a little faster in the choruses and there are elements of rhythmic effects that give the song a slightly "quirky" style. The bass is a bit heavier and has a more prominent role here than in my previous songs. A different song for me and it was a lot of fun to work on it.
I wrote New Start with a sense of fresh start in my own life. As usual, I start from myself, but the song became more than that. It's about a couple who had a falling out and went their separate ways. But the man's feelings are still there, and he declares that he is now a "new man" and pleads with her to let him back into her life and start again. He has indeed changed and she should give him another chance.
For me, the text is partly a poignant declaration of love and at the same time a typical, somewhat desperate attempt at persuasion from a man who has not really learned anything or changed as the woman might have wished him to do. Perhaps she just wants to be left alone and create a life for herself without this pushy escort who hasn't really understood what she needs or wants from life.
But the woman's answers are at least as emotionally charged as the man's. The beautiful, calm passages express hope and a longing to be taken seriously. It is as if she is saying: "you haven't listened to me, I've tried to reach you, but you haven't understood".
There is some humor here too. We may need distance from difficult subjects like love to cope. And women continue to choose men who are not good for them.
I imagine it could be performed as a duet between a man and a woman, but also works as it is. Maybe the whole text is a man's declaration of love from beginning to end. It's up to each person to interpret the song as they wish. What thoughts do you have when you listen to it?
